ESA Humanitarian Relief Fund, comes to aid of the people in Emilia-Romagna in Italy, affected by catastrophic floods in May.
Climate disaster relief: €4,000 donated to flooded region of Emilia-Romagna.
In May, the Emilia-Romagna region in the north-east of Italy experienced severe floods when months of drought suddenly ended with extremely heavy rains. On 25 May, the ESA Humanitarian Relief Fund donated €4,000 to support the Protezione Civile’s effort in the area, thanks to the generous support of our workforce.
After Loretta Latronico, an ESRIN colleague and a volunteer in the ESRIN Voluntary Group (EVG), reached out to the ESA Humanitarian Relief Fund (HRF), a donation was immediately made to support the population affected by the flooding. “The ESRIN Voluntary Group is a very small entity with limited resources, and I thought the ESA HRF would be able to support the emergency action in a more efficient way,” Loretta explains. Indeed, in less than 24 hours, the HRF Committee agreed on an emergency donation of €4,000 to the Protezione Civile, a reliable, efficient organisation that was already active in the region.
The ESA HRF wants to thank all the members of the ESA community whose regular contributions to the Fund allow the committee to respond to such unfortunate crises.
Run by ESA volunteers and fully funded by individual donations, the ESA Humanitarian Relief Fund primarily aims to support small communities around the world by encouraging self- sufficiency, long-term sustainability, educational programmes, clean water and sanitation, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It also makes emergency donations to help in times of crises, such as a war, climate or natural disasters.
